Google determines the search ranking of your page based on its relevance to the keyword and the page perceived authority. The authority of a page is determined by both site-wide and page level factors.
The most important factor in determining a page authority is the number and quality of backlinks pointing to the page. Let us look at the search result for "best mobile under 15,000".
As you can see the top ranked results are either on big, popular domains as indicated by high domain authority or have a large number of links or a combination of both. Let us explore this a little more. Let me go to the second ranking page and copy its URL.
We will explore this page using a link research tool, Ahrefs. So I paste the URL in Ahrefs, and then I search to find backlinks to this page. Ahrefs is showing me all the other pages on the internet which are linking to the second ranking page.
So this called link research. When you publish a page on your site you need to build backlinks like these in order to improve your page search ranking.
In most cases, other sites will not link to your page on their own. You need to approach sites, which may link to your page, and ask them for a backlink. A competitor's link profile helps us find pages which may link to our own page.
And that is where this link research becomes important. For example, if I have a page that competes with this NDTV page that is ranking number two in Google search then I would want to reach out to all these pages which are linking to NDTV page and ask them for a backlink.
Since they're already linked to a similar content they might link to my page also. You can also build links to your site by posting the page's link on relevant forums. For example, look at this link.
This is coming from a forum. So somebody from NDTV might have gone and posted the link to the page on this forum. You can also create backlinks by sharing your page on social bookmarking sites such as Digg. For example, this is a shared link on Digg.
If I click this it takes me to the website where this article was posted originally. So as you can see, everything on Digg is a backlink to another site. To bookmark your page on Digg, scroll down to the bottom, click Submit A Link, and here you can enter your page's URL and submit it.
When it comes to building backlinks quality is more important than quantity. So don't go around building links to your page from anywhere. You should try to get backlinks from other authoritative sites. For example, Digg is a high authority site, so a backlink from Digg is more valuable. (upbeat music) - Hey. Thanks for watching.
