Plenty of websites promise "free courses with certificates," but many only make the videos free and charge for the certificate. This guide sticks to providers whose own websites say the learning and the certificate are free, and explains what to watch for elsewhere.

Watch out: "free course" doesn't always mean a free certificate
- Check before you start. On many large course platforms, you can watch lessons for free but the certificate costs money. Read the course page or the help center before investing your time.
- Look for financial aid. Some platforms offer aid or scholarships for paid certificates.
- Avoid certificate mills. A certificate is only valuable if employers recognize the organization behind it.
How to get the most out of a free certificate
- Build something. Projects, such as a website or a sample ad campaign, impress employers more than the certificate alone.
- Add it to LinkedIn and your CV with the date you earned it.
- Use AI as a tutor, not a shortcut. Ask a free chatbot to explain concepts you're stuck on. See our free chatbot comparison.
- Set a schedule. Self-paced courses are easy to abandon. Plan 30 minutes a day.
