AI voices have become remarkably natural. Free text-to-speech (TTS) tools can read articles aloud while you cook, narrate a YouTube video, or help people who find reading on screen difficult. Here are four free options and what each is best for.

1. Microsoft Edge Read aloud: listen to any web page
If you just want to listen to articles, you may already have a great tool. Microsoft Edge's Read aloud reads content with "a variety of natural-sounding voices and accents." You can choose the language and reading speed.
- How to start: open the Edge menu (Settings and more) > More tools > Read aloud, or select some text, right-click and choose Read aloud selection.
- Offline and mobile: it also works offline (with fewer voices) and in the Edge app for iPhone and Android.

2. Canva text-to-speech: quick social voiceovers
Canva advertises free text-to-speech with AI voices in several languages, including English, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and Arabic. You just type your text, with no microphone needed.
- Limit: 2,000 characters per conversion. For longer scripts, Canva suggests converting in sections and joining them in its video editor.
- Best for: Reels, Shorts and simple explainer videos you're already designing in Canva.

3. ElevenLabs Free: the most realistic voices
ElevenLabs is known for very lifelike AI voices. Its free plan includes 10,000 credits per month, plus text to speech, speech to text, sound effects and voice design.
- Watch out: ElevenLabs lists a commercial license only from its paid Starter plan upward, so don't use free-plan audio in monetized projects without checking its terms.
- Paid option: the Starter plan includes 30,000 credits, a commercial license and instant voice cloning.

Tips for better AI voiceovers
- Write for the ear. Use short sentences and simple words, and read your script aloud first.
- Use punctuation to control pacing. Commas and full stops create natural pauses.
- Spell out tricky words phonetically if a name is mispronounced.
- Check the license before using AI audio in monetized videos.
- Never clone someone's voice without their clear permission.
