Job hunting takes a lot of writing: a CV, cover letters tailored to each role, and answers to interview questions. Free AI tools can speed all of this up, as long as you keep the final words honest and your own. Here's a free toolkit for each stage of the job search.
Quick overview
| Job search step | Free tool |
|---|---|
| Design your CV | Canva resume templates or Google Docs templates |
| Write and tailor content | A free AI chatbot |
| Polish the language | Grammarly Free |
| Practise interviews | Gemini Live (voice) or any chatbot |
1. Design your CV: Canva or Google Docs
Canva offers free resume templates you can download as PDF, JPG or PNG. Its resume page also gives sensible advice for applicant tracking systems (ATS), the software many employers use to scan CVs:
- Use clear section headings such as "Work Experience" and "Skills".
- Avoid text boxes, tables and images, which ATS software may not read well.
- Use a standard, readable font.
- Include keywords from the job description.
Tip: for online applications, choose a simple one-column template and download it as a PDF.
Google Docs also has free resume templates in its template gallery, and a Docs file is easy to edit and export as a PDF or Word file.

2. Write and tailor your content: a free AI chatbot
Free chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot are excellent writing partners. Useful prompts:
- "Here is my CV and a job description. Which keywords and skills from the job are missing from my CV?"
- "Rewrite this bullet point to focus on results: 'Responsible for social media.'"
- "Draft a short cover letter for this role using only the experience in my CV. Don't invent anything."
Be honest: AI sometimes adds skills or achievements you don't have. Remove anything that isn't true, because you'll be asked about it in the interview.

3. Polish the language: Grammarly Free
Grammarly's free plan fixes basic errors and shows your writing tone, and it includes 100 AI prompts per month for generating text. A last check for typos is worth it, because spelling mistakes are an easy reason for a recruiter to move on.

4. Practise interviews: Gemini Live or a chatbot
Google lists Gemini Live, its spoken conversation mode, as part of the free Gemini plan. Google's career resources describe using Gemini Live to "simulate a real-time, conversational interview, providing instant, structured feedback on your responses."
Try: "Act as an interviewer for a [job title] role. Ask me one question at a time, then give feedback on my answer using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result)."

Job search safety tips
- Protect your personal data. Remove your home address, ID numbers and similar details before pasting your CV into an AI tool.
- Watch for scams. Real employers don't ask you to pay for a job or a "training kit".
- Keep your voice. Read every AI draft out loud and change anything that doesn't sound like you.
