Steps checked against Blogger's official help pages on October 10, 2026. Google occasionally changes menu names, so your screens may look slightly different.
Blogger is Google's free blogging platform. You don't pay for hosting, there's nothing to install, and you get a free blogspot.com address. It's one of the easiest ways to start writing online. This guide walks you through creating a blog and the first settings worth changing, so you start on the right foot.
What you need
- A Google account (the same one you use for Gmail or YouTube works).
- An idea of what you want to write about. A clear topic helps readers, and Google, understand your blog.
Step 1: Create your blog
According to Blogger's help center, creating a blog takes just a few steps:
- Sign in at blogger.com with your Google account.
- Open the dropdown arrow in the left menu and choose to create a new blog.
- Type a name for your blog. You can change it later.
- Choose a web address, such as
yourname.blogspot.com. Pick something short and easy to spell. - Save your choices.
Blogger notes that your blog must follow the Blogger Content Policy and Terms of Service.

Step 2: Choose a theme
Go to Theme in the left menu and pick a design. Choose one that's responsive, meaning it adapts to phone screens. Most visitors read on mobile, and Google's Auto ads also need a responsive theme. You can customize colors and fonts afterwards.
Step 3: Fill in the basic settings
In Settings, update these first:
- Description: one or two sentences on what your blog covers. Many themes show it under the title.
- Blog language and time zone, so post dates are correct.
- HTTPS: make sure HTTPS is on, so your blog loads securely.
Step 4: Create your essential pages
Blogger has Pages (for content that doesn't change) separate from Posts (your articles). Before you publish much, create:
- About: who runs the blog, what it covers and why readers can trust it.
- Contact: a way for readers to reach you. Blogger's Contact Form gadget works well.
- Privacy Policy: especially important if you plan to show ads.
Then add a Pages gadget in Layout so visitors can find them.
Step 5: Write your first posts
- Answer real questions. Write the post you wish you'd found when you were learning the topic.
- Use clear headings (Heading and Subheading in the editor) to break up the text.
- Add images with descriptive alt text.
- Use labels to group related posts.
- Write in your own words and check facts. AI can help you plan, but readers and Google value original, accurate content. See 7 Free AI Tools for Bloggers.
Step 6: Connect Google Search Console
Search Console shows how people find your blog in Google, and Blogger blogs can usually be verified automatically. Follow our step-by-step guide: How to Add Your Blogger Blog to Google Search Console.
Optional: use your own domain
You can keep the free blogspot.com address forever, or later connect a domain you buy (like yourblog.com) from the blog's Settings. A custom domain looks more professional, but it costs money each year, so it's fine to start free.
Thinking about earning money?
Once your blog has a solid amount of original content, you can apply for Google AdSense directly from Blogger's Earnings tab. Read our guide on getting a Blogger blog approved for AdSense first.
